Today the lab of the Iron Chef project took place, but before that occurred we received the email reply from Mr. Ahmad briefing what we were going to be doing.
From this, and after walking through the actual lab, we constructed a more accurate set of materials...
and procedures...
The actual lab can be understood through the procedures, but here are some additional notes that are worth knowing.
Finally, here are some pictures of us actually conducting the experiment.
This photo above shows the fume hood where the experiment was conducted, in order to keep toxic chemicals from getting breathed in, or out of control. You can see the writing on the glass giving a map to the procedure.
Here (above) Mr. Ahmad is guiding us through the experiment.
A close-up of the scientific layout for the experiment.
This photo shows me setting down the evaporation dish after igniting it with the flames. The plastic and Acetone are within the dish, and the Hydrochloric acid are added afterward.
Here is the photo of me initially putting the evaporation dish over the Bunsen burner, causing the acetone to ignite.
And finally we have the flame melting the BPA within the plastic.
The extraction of BPA is officially done, and currently it is being contained within an incubator to keep it from hardenning.
